Jesus, Let My Lifesong Sing To You!

Everyone has a Lifesong. Each of us sings a song to the Lord and to the people who know us and to the world we live in about who we are as people and what we believe is important in life.

All too often I find my own lifesong singing about myself and my own petty desires and little toys. I want a new Palm Pilot or a new car or a new…(insert your own gadget here). Or I simply waste time in front of the television watching meaningless drivel while the Lord waits for me to come meet with Him. Or I ask God to look away while I yell at my kids or argue with my wife because I’m trying to have my own selfish way. Then at the end of the day I look back and find my lifesong to be nothing more than a miserable noise about me.

But God wants better things for us than that. He wants the music of our lives to be a melody of love for Him and a song of service to the people He created. What makes the difference in our lives between miserable noise and beautiful music is whether or not we have God’s unselfish Love in our hearts.

1st Corinthians 13 says that we can do lots of wonderful things but unless we do them from a heart of love we are only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

So how can my life be more than this noisy gong or clanging cymbal? The first line of this song is "Empty hands held high". In the Bible this was a symbolic gesture of love and surrender to God. A sign of surrendering our lives and our wills and our own selfish ways to live for God. Romans 12:1 exhorts us to offer our bodies (our "Selves") as a "living sacrifice". E.H. Peterson in “The Message” puts it this way:

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.

With God helping me I want to live like that. I want my lifesong to sing to the Lord a lovesong everyday, realizing that my "Self" is such a small sacrifice compared to everything the King of the Universe sacrificed for me. And at the end of my life I want to see the smile that my lifesong brings to God’s face.

As the song says; I want to sign His name to the end of this day knowing that my heart was true (in tune) with what He called me to do today.

Father God, teach me to love you the way you love me. Teach me to serve you by serving the people you created from a heart of love and let my lifesong bring a smile to you today and every day.

Lyrics:

Empty hands held high
Such small sacrifice
If not joined with my life
I sing in vain tonight

May the words I say
And the things I do
Make my lifesong sing
Bring a smile to You

Chorus:
Let my lifesong sing to You
Let my lifesong sing to You
I want to sign your name to the end of this day
Knowing that my heart was true
Let my lifesong sing to You

Lord, I give my life
A living sacrifice
To reach a world in need
To be Your hands and feet

So may the words I say
And the things I do
make my lifesong sing
Bring a smile to you

Chorus

Hallelujah Hallelujah
Let my lifesong sing to You
Hallelujah Hallelujah
Let my lifesong sing to You
Hallelujah Hallelujah
Let my lifesong sing to You

Chorus
