Standing on the promises of God
is one way to honor God!
Did you know that standing on the promises of God is one way to honor God’s Word? Did you know that God wants you to hold Him to His promises? He does!
Imagine the following:
You call up an old friend and chat for a while. During the conversation you invite your friend to dinner with you at the best restaurant in town. You tell your friend to meet you at 7:00 the next night at such and such restaurant and that the meal is already paid for, you can’t get your money back and all they have to do is show up and enjoy the meal. The big night comes and your friend doesn’t show up. You wait until 9:00 before finally leaving disappointed. You call your friend the next morning to make sure that everything is alright and he tells you that he is fine, he didn’t show up at the restaurant because he didn’t think you were serious about your offer.
How would that make you feel? Frustrated that your friend did not believe you? Angry that the meal was paid for and all your friend had to do was demonstrate some faith in your word by showing up but he couldn’t even do that much? Wouldn’t your friend have been showing you honor by arriving at the restaurant expecting you to keep your promises?
God wants us to hold Him to His promises! Nehemiah reminded God of His promises and expected Him to keep them. In the book of Nehemiah chapter 1 when he found out that the people living in Jerusalem were living in fear because the walls were broken down and the gates were burned with fire he fasted for several days and then prayed:
Lord God of heaven, you are great and fearsome. And you faithfully keep your promises to everyone who loves you and obeys your commands. I am your servant, so please have mercy on me and answer the prayer that I make day and night for these people of Israel who serve you. I, my family, and the rest of your people have sinned by choosing to disobey you and the laws and teachings you gave to your servant Moses.
Please remember the promise you made to Moses. You told him that if we were unfaithful, you would scatter us among foreign nations. But you also said that no matter how far away we were, we could turn to you and start obeying your laws. Then you would bring us back to the place where you have chosen to be worshiped.
Our Lord, I am praying for your servants—those you rescued by your great strength and mighty power. Please answer my prayer and the prayer of your other servants who gladly honor your name. When I serve the king his wine today, make him pleased with me and have him do what I ask.
(CEV Ne 1:5-11)
The promises of God for you are already paid for. They were paid for 2000 years ago by the blood of Jesus on the cross.
For it is he who is the “Yes” to all God’s promises. This is why through Jesus Christ our “Amen” is said to the glory of God.
(GNT 2 Co 1:20)
Are you saying “Amen” to (standing on, living out and walking in) the promises of God? It glorifies Him when you do!
Father God, please help me stand on the promises you have made to me in your Word and help me walk in them today and every day. Amen
Lyrics:
Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Chorus:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.
Chorus
Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.
Chorus
Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.
Chorus
Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.
Chorus
