Christian hymn lyrics are wonderful to study for daily devotions.
Many old christian hymn lyrics contain truths that can bring us closer to God and deepen our worship. Sometimes we get complacent though, sitting in church week after week singing old hymn after old hymn but not really paying attention to the words. Really studying the lyrics of the hymns we sing can bring out new meaning and make them fresh to us again.
Most people who grew up in church have a favorite hymn or two. My wife's favorite is "It Is Well With My Soul" My favorite was the way my church sung "The Lord's Prayer" The pastor who moved from the church right before my family started going there used to stop the congregation in the middle of singing hymns to challenge them to not just recite words from a page set to music but really think about what they were singing, and to sing praises to God like they meant it!
I've been in congregations where the praises to God through the singing of hymns was absolutely glorious! My heart is blessed (and I believe God's heart is blessed too) by passionate worship. I have also been in congregations where the people sang "Crown Him With Many Crowns" with all of the energy and conviction of your average door knob.
I don't know about you, but when I read the psalms or when I read about the throne room of God in the book of Revelation I see passion and energy and conviction in the worship.
I pray that these devotionals based on christian hymn lyrics will give you new freshness in your worship. Let God touch you and change you and the next time you’re singing hymns in church, think about what you are singing and sing His praises like you mean it!
