The Way I Was Made
Is to glorify God!

“The Way I Was Made” is not only the title of this song by Chris Tomlin but he has also written a book by the same title. Like the song, the book talks about being who God made us to be. Chris says in the book; “You were made for more than this world sells…We were created to shine the spotlight on God, to spread the fame of God everywhere we go.”

Chris also says; “The Bible clearly shows us that you and I have been uniquely created for a purposeful life. But here’s the unamerican part: It’s not meant to be about us or our career or our fame, it’s all about God and His glory.”

What amazes me is how much God honors us when we honor Him.

“That’s how much you mean to me!
That’s how much I love you!
I’d sell off the whole world to get you back,
trade the creation just for you.
“So don’t be afraid: I’m with you.
I’ll round up all your scattered children,
pull them in from east and west.
I’ll send orders north and south:
‘Send them back.
Return my sons from distant lands,
my daughters from faraway places.
I want them back, every last one who bears my name,
every man, woman, and child
Whom I created for my glory,
yes, personally formed and made each one.’ ”

Is 43:4-7 (The Message)

This passage from Isaiah 43 is God’s promise to His children for when they turn from following their own ways and begin to honor Him and seek His glory and fame. He promised that He would restore them from wherever they were scattered.

As Chris says in his book: “You’ve been created for a great life. A life that tells the story of God.”

Let today be the day you go free from what this world sells to be the way you were made.

Father God, Thank you for creating me with a purpose. Help me to live the way I was made and spread your fame today.

Lyrics:

Caught in the half-light, I’m caught alone,
Waking up to the sunrise, and the radio.
Feels like I’m tied up, what’s holding me?
Just praying today will be the day I go Free.

Chorus:
And I want to live like there’s no tomorrow.
I want to dance like no one’s around.
I want to sing like nobody’s listening,
Before I lay my body down.
I want to give like I have plenty.
I want to love like I’m not afraid.
I want to be the man I was meant to be.
I want to be the way I was made.

Made in Your likeness, made with Your hands.
Made to discover who You are and who I am.
In all I’ve forgotten help me to find
All that You’ve promised let it be in my life.

Chorus (x2)

I want to be the way I was made.
I want to be the way I was made.
I want to be the way I was made.

The One Thing I Don’t Question
Is You, Lord!

Do you ever have times when you’re not certain about anything in your life? When everything and everyone you thought you could count on turns against you? When you begin to question everything about your life? Or times when it seems like the world is falling down around you and you’re so stressed out you can’t even see straight, let alone think straight? The song "The One Thing" reminds me of those times in my life. And I get the feeling from the words of the song that Paul Colman has seen those times in his own life as well.

During those times in my life the one thing I have to fall back on is a quote from Job after he had lost everything and even his friends started turning against him.

I know that my Savior lives, and at the end he will stand on this earth. My flesh may be destroyed, yet from this body I will see God. Yes, I will see him for myself, and I long for that moment!
Job 19:24-27 (CEV)

What do you hold on to? Is it the Lord, from whom you can draw true strength or are you depending on lesser things to pull you through?

Father God, thank you that you are more faithful to me than I am to you. Thank you that you are a strong tower that I can run to and depend on to pull me through my times of doubt.

Lyrics:

Here I am
In a river of questions
Can I pour my heart out to a listening ear?
I see this life
Its valleys and mountains
And I think of all the roads that brought me here
Oh that brought me here

I’ve questioned my reasons
This life I’m living
I’ve questioned my ability
To judge wrong from right
I’ve questioned all the things
that I’ve ever called certain
My race, my religion, my country, my mind

Chorus:
But the one thing I don’t question is You
You really love me like you say you do
Yea the one thing I don’t question is You
You really love me like you say you do
So hold me Hold me
So Hold me

Well I’ve questioned significance
Meaning and relevance
Does the work I’m doing really matter at all?
Well I’ve questioned my friendships
Alliance, dependence
Who will still be here when I fall?

Only one thing doesn’t change
Only one thing stays the same
All I know at the end of the day is your love remains

God Gives Us Many Kinds Of Miracles So We Can Know Him Better!

Miracles are all around us, and this song by John David Webster is about three different and powerful miracles. The first is the miracle of creation, the second is the how God speaks to us through His creation and the third is the miracle of God Himself.

God speaks to us in a number of ways. The bible says in Romans 1:20 that we can see God’s divine character and eternal power by observing nature and, in fact, God uses nature in the bible to illustrate His qualities. In Job chapters 40 and 41 God uses the behemoth and the leviathan to show his power. In the book of 1st Kings God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper.

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
1 Ki 19:11-13 (NIV)

My question is: Are we able to recognize His voice? Are we intimately familiar enough with the voice of God that we could recognize it (or the lack of it) in an earthquake or a wind or a fire but hear it in a gentle whisper? In “Miracle” John David Webster talks about his awakening:

Truth be told
I wasn’t one for miracles
Let’s just say I’ve changed my view
Cause loving you I’ve been awakened

John David Webster has been awakened to God’s voice in nature and in his own life. How many ways do you hear God? My prayer for you today is the prayer of Paul for the Ephesians:

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
Ephesians 1:17-19a (NIV)

Lyrics:

I love the way you touch me, I’m so amazed
Your beauty speaks a thousand words,
then it takes my breath away
You burn me up like fire,
and you pour on me like rain
It’s truly amazing, like a miracle

Chorus:
I see you in the sun that shines in the sky
I hear you in the sound of the oceans tide
I feel you in this gentle breeze tonight
I try to explain it,
It’s a miracle to me

You can move my mountains, you can still my soul
You whisper to me like the wind, but it shakes me to the bone
Your Spirit takes me far away, but I feel just right at home
It’s truly amazing, like a miracle

Chorus:

Truth be told
I wasn’t one for miracles
Let’s just say I’ve changed my view
Cause loving you I’ve been awakened
The earth starts quaking
I’m blown away I’m overtaken
By the miracle, the miracle of you

I just can’t contain it
It’s truly amazing, it’s a miracle to me
Oh Yeah, Oh Yeah, a miracle to me

I Was Made To Love And Be Loved By You!

Do you ever find yourself reaching for your God-given dreams and forgetting about the God who gave them to you?

"Made To Love" is about someone who does that. He forgets God and starts looking at what the world and the "haters" call "cold, hard reality". He asks what happened to the passion he once had, the flame that made him feel truly alive. Then he realizes that somewhere along the way he forgot what he was made for, to just love and be loved by God.

In the chorus he experiences a little worship session where he once again finds God and just enjoys loving and being loved by Him for a while. In this time of worship his passion and faith are renewed and in the second verse God puts him back in the "ring" fighting once again for those dreams! This time, even though the "haters" are trying to discourage him, he keeps the faith because he remembers to reach up to God for that Holy Spirit covering like a cool breeze and he is drawn back again into worship.

Take a few minutes right now just to love and be loved by God.

And whenever you find yourself getting discouraged, consider God…

…Who created everything by speaking it into existence (Gen 1),
…Who measures the universe by the span of His hand (Isa 40:12),
…Who knit you together in your mother’s womb (Ps 139:13),
…Who bends over you to hear your prayers (Ps 40:1),
…Who rolled up His sleeves to work out your salvation (De 26:8),
…Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (I Pet 2:9),
…Who knows how many hairs you have on your head (Mt 10:30),
…Who left behind the glories of Heaven and suffered the pains of death so that you could have abundant life (Jn 10:10),
…Who took your sins upon Himself and healed you with His wounds (Isa 53:5),
…Who rejoices over you with singing (Zeph 3:17),
…Who loves you like He loves His Only Begotten Son (Jn 17:23),
…Who adopted you as His own (Gal 4:4-7),
…Who has a plan for your prosperity (Jer 29:11),
…Who calls you His friend (Jn 15:15),
…Who is even now preparing a rich feast to openly declare His Love for you (SoS 2:4).

This very same God promises you …
…That if you delight in and meditate on His Word, you will have success in everything you do, (Ps 1)
…That if you keep your mind on Him and trust in Him, He will keep you in perfect peace, (Isa 26:3)

Father God, help me to remember your love for me today. Whenever I’m feeling discouraged remind me that I was made to love you. Draw me back to worship you, to love and be loved by you, to know and be known by you. That I would find strength to fight for the dreams you’ve given me. And that you would be glorified in my life today and every day. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.

What ever happened to a passion I could live for?
What became of the flame that made me feel more?
And when did I forget that…

I was made to love You
And You said You’d keep me
never would You leave me
I was made to love
And be loved by You

Back in the ring You got me swingin’ for the grand prize
I feel a breeze cover me called Jehovah
And Daddy I’m on my way

I Want To Sing Louder Than The Angels!

“Louder Than The Angels” is Joel Engle’s way of saying that our worship services should, figuratively speaking, “blow the doors off their hinges” even more so than the worship scene in Isaiah:

In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. Hovering around him were mighty seraphim, each with six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with the remaining two they flew. In a great chorus they sang, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty! The whole earth is filled with his glory!" The glorious singing shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire sanctuary was filled with smoke.
Is 6:1 (NLT)

In this picture of the throne room of God the angels are praising the Lord so powerfully that the temple is shaken to its very foundations at the sound of their voices. But the angels don’t know what it means to be redeemed. The angels in this picture who are praising God with such intensity around His throne were never lost and don’t know what it means to have the Son of God die for them. But we do. We know the pain of being separated from God and we know the joy of redemption when God reached down into our filthy lives and hearts and gave us the gift of salvation which He paid so dearly for.

So I want to sing louder than the angels for I have a thousand times more reason to glorify God and to sing thanks and praise to Him than the angels do.

Father God, Thank you for your redeeming love that has captured me and causes my life to declare the glories of your name. Give me the means to glorify you even more in everything I do.

The hosts of Heaven lift their songs of praise… to You
O Lord our Lord, Your Holy throne it thunders with worship
As the angels sing “worthy is Your name!”

Chorus
But I want to sing louder than the angels, oh yes
An ocean of praise, I will bring to You
And I want to sing louder than the angels, oh yes
A thousand songs of praise, I will sing

O Lord our Lord, how majestic is Your name
The reason why I sing, the angels long to know
O Lord our Lord, redeeming love has captured me
And made my life declare the glories of Your name

Chorus

I will sing
A thousand songs, I will sing

Chorus

Jesus, Let My Lifesong Sing To You!

Everyone has a Lifesong. Each of us sings a song to the Lord and to the people who know us and to the world we live in about who we are as people and what we believe is important in life.

All too often I find my own lifesong singing about myself and my own petty desires and little toys. I want a new Palm Pilot or a new car or a new…(insert your own gadget here). Or I simply waste time in front of the television watching meaningless drivel while the Lord waits for me to come meet with Him. Or I ask God to look away while I yell at my kids or argue with my wife because I’m trying to have my own selfish way. Then at the end of the day I look back and find my lifesong to be nothing more than a miserable noise about me.

But God wants better things for us than that. He wants the music of our lives to be a melody of love for Him and a song of service to the people He created. What makes the difference in our lives between miserable noise and beautiful music is whether or not we have God’s unselfish Love in our hearts.

1st Corinthians 13 says that we can do lots of wonderful things but unless we do them from a heart of love we are only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

So how can my life be more than this noisy gong or clanging cymbal? The first line of this song is "Empty hands held high". In the Bible this was a symbolic gesture of love and surrender to God. A sign of surrendering our lives and our wills and our own selfish ways to live for God. Romans 12:1 exhorts us to offer our bodies (our "Selves") as a "living sacrifice". E.H. Peterson in “The Message” puts it this way:

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.

With God helping me I want to live like that. I want my lifesong to sing to the Lord a lovesong everyday, realizing that my "Self" is such a small sacrifice compared to everything the King of the Universe sacrificed for me. And at the end of my life I want to see the smile that my lifesong brings to God’s face.

As the song says; I want to sign His name to the end of this day knowing that my heart was true (in tune) with what He called me to do today.

Father God, teach me to love you the way you love me. Teach me to serve you by serving the people you created from a heart of love and let my lifesong bring a smile to you today and every day.

Such small sacrifice

In the Blink of an eye I’ll be closer to You than I’ve ever been!

In the Blink of an eye by MercyMe is a reminder to me that life is short and that I need to make the most of the time God has given me here. Sometimes a song or a verse or a sermon hits me right between the eyes. This song is one of those, especially the second verse:

Sometimes I feel disappointed
By the way I spend my time
How can I further Your kingdom
When I’m so wrapped up in mine

The first verse talks about the fact that God put us here for a purpose. He created and called each and every one of us to do something for His Kingdom. Whether we are full-time ministers or lay people, God has a plan for us to further His Kingdom.

The premise for this song comes from I Corinthians 15 which talks about the rapture happening in the blink of an eye. The truth is that none of us knows just how long we have here. As I Cor says:

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
(NIV 1 Co 15:51-58)

The last line of the song says:

There’s a reason I’m alive for a blink of an eye

Do you know the reason you’re alive? Do you know the work God has called you to? If not, ask Him and He will tell you.

Father God, help me to give myself to the work you have given me to do today.

Healing Rain Is Falling Down. Let It Fall!

20 The Countdown Magazine has a powerful "Healing Rain" video on their Artist Exclusives page. (scroll almost to the bottom of the page) The video shows Michael W. Smith walking through a town inviting hurting and hopeless people to come experience God’s healing rain. What strikes me most about the video is that, while a few people join him in the rain, there are a large number of people that just stand back and watch. I think the reason this strikes me is that more often than not I find myself standing back with the crowd instead of stepping out and accepting God’s healing. "After all", I tell myself, "I don’t really need God’s healing like those people do. I’m not homeless or a drug addict or an alcoholic. I’m OK just the way I am…"

The truth of the matter is that, while I may be fooling others and sometimes even myself, I am not fooling God. He sees my pain and my fear and He sees those things I run to for comfort instead of running to Him and He waits patiently, longing for the day that I will lay down my fear and accept His healing.

The problem is that we’ve all been rejected or used or laughed at by people we went to for help or who we wanted to impress or be friends with but who themselves were wounded and acting out of their own pain. So we’ve learned to believe the lie that says we can’t really trust anyone but ourselves. Then we let our pain and our fear keep us from true intimacy with each other and from true intimacy with God.

On the one hand we cry out to God for healing from our pain but on the other hand we’re afraid of letting down the walls that keep God and everyone else at a "safe distance" and too far away to touch our pain and heal our hurts and fears.

I think Michael W. Smith understands that conflict in this song. That’s why the song talks about not being afraid "to be washed in Heaven’s rain". We all need to come to that point where true intimacy with God and with each other is more important to us than maintaining our own defenses.

One of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes is from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe when the children are in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver talking about Aslan. Lucy asks if Aslan, being a lion, is safe and Mr. Beaver responds: “Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

Trust in God’s goodness today, He will not reject you. Open yourself up to Him and let him heal your spirit, soul and body. He isn’t safe but he is good!

Father, give me courage today to come to you with my pain, lay down my defenses and accept your healing rain, knowing that you are good and desire my healing.

Healing rain is coming down
It’s coming nearer to this old town
Rich and poor, weak and strong
It’s bringing mercy, it won’t be long

Healing rain is coming down
It’s coming closer to the lost and found
Tears of joy, and tears of shame
Are washed forever in Jesus’ name

Healing rain, it comes with fire
So let it fall and take us higher
Healing rain, I’m not afraid
To be washed in Heaven’s rain

Lift your heads, let us return
To the mercy seat where time began
And in your eyes, I see the pain
Come soak this dry heart with healing rain

And only You, the Son of man
Can take a leper and let him stand
So lift your hands, they can be held
By someone greater, the great I Am

Healing rain, it comes with fire
So let it fall and take us higher
Healing rain, I’m not afraid
To be washed in Heaven’s rain
To be washed in Heaven’s rain

Cry Out To Jesus. He'll Meet You Wherever You Are!

"Cry Out To Jesus" is a song of hope for hurting people. Like many of the songs on the album "Wherever You Are" by Third Day, it speaks of the pains and sorrows of this life that we all face. Whether we’re Christian or non-Christian we all have friends and loved ones die, we all face problems in our lives caused by our own sin and the sin of others and we all go through times when God brings pain into our lives to test us and make us stronger. But the message of this song and of this album is that there is real hope to be found in crying out to Jesus, that He will meet you wherever you are.

The story is told of a family whose teenage daughter didn’t feel like her parents loved her and she didn’t want to live under the rules of the house so she ran away from home. Her parents searched and searched for her and heard from someone that she had become a prostitute and a drug addict in the red-light district of Los Angeles. The daughter also heard from someone that her parents were looking for her but she was too ashamed of herself to contact them. The parents sold everything they had and with broken hearts they moved into the area to look for their daughter. They printed up posters with their daughter’s picture and hung them on every light pole they could find in the district. The posters simply read:

    Wherever you are
Whatever you’ve become
We still love you
Please come home

When the daughter saw the poster those words gave her the hope she needed to contact her parents, cry out to them for help and to finally come home.

While Jesus never promised to keep us from pain, He did promise He will never leave us alone. He simply wants you to recognize His Presence and cry out to Him. Consider the lengths He went to to bring you to Him in the first place:

He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised, and we did not care.

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God for his own sins! But he was wounded and crushed for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped, and we were healed! All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the guilt and sins of us all.
Is 53:2 (NLT)

Father God, Thank you for your love for me. Thank you that you will always be there when I cry out to you.

Lyrics:

To everyone who's lost someone they love
Long before it was their time
You feel like the days you had were not enough
when you said goodbye

And to all of the people with burdens and pains
Keeping you back from your life
You believe that there's nothing and there is no one
Who can make it right

Chorus:
There is hope for the helpless
Rest for the weary
And love for the broken heart
There is grace and forgiveness
Mercy and healing
He'll meet you wherever you are
Cry out to Jesus, Cry out to Jesus

For the marriage that's struggling just to hang on
They've lost all of their faith in love
And they've done all they can to make it right again
Still it's not enough

For the ones who can't break the addictions and chains
You try to give up but you come back again
Just remember that you're not alone in your shame
And your suffering

Chorus

When you're lonely
And it feels like the whole world is falling on you
You just reach out, you just cry out to Jesus
Cry to Jesus

To the widow who suffers from being alone
Wiping the tears from her eyes
For the children around the world without a home
Say a prayer tonight

Brave, You make me want to be brave.

Are you brave? Is there someone in your life who makes you want to be brave?

Most of us have dreams and goals that inspire us. All too often, though, those same dreams that excite us and keep us going also scare us because they mean we need to step out of our comfort zone to achieve them.

Nichole Nordeman seems to understand these conflicting emotions. From the lyrics of this song I'd say she has lived with the same fears and struggles a lot of us have. She sings in this song: "'Cause it's been fear that ties me down to everything But it's been love, your love, that cuts the strings"

On her website Nichole dedicates this song "For Charlie, who rearranged my fearful heart." Do you have someone who rearranges your fearful heart? Do you have someone in your life who believes in you and will love you no matter what you do or how badly you fall? Someone who challenges you to be better than you are now and encourages you to follow your dreams? We all need someone like that. My wife is that person for me.

Whether or not you have someone like that in your life that you can touch and see, God wants to be that kind of person for you. It amazes me how many verses there are in the bible where God encourages us to "be strong and courageous."

My favorite "Be strong and brave" verse is from Daniel:

The one who looked like a man touched me again and gave me strength. He said, "Daniel, don't be afraid. God loves you very much. Peace be with you. Be strong now; be courageous."
When he spoke to me, I became stronger and said, "Master, speak, since you have given me strength."

Daniel 10:18 (NCV)

God created you for a purpose and He has given you a dream to match that purpose. Now be strong and courageous in Him and He will help you build your dreams.

Lyrics:

The gate is wide
The road is paved in moderation
The crowd is kind and quick to pull you in
Welcome to the middle ground
You’re safe and sound and
Until now, it’s where I’ve been

'Cause it's been fear that ties me down to everything
But it's been love, your love, that cuts the strings
So long status quo
I think I just let go
You make me want to be brave
The way it always was
Is no longer good enough
You make me want to be brave
Brave, brave

I am small
And I speak when I'm spoken to
But I am willing to risk it all
I say your name
Just your name and I'm ready to jump
Even ready to fall…
Why did I take this vow of compromise?
Why did I try to keep it all inside?

I've never known a fire that didn't begin with a flame
Every storm will start with just a drop of rain
But if you believe in me, that changes everything
